International Worthing Birdman 2008

The Worthing Birdman has come and gone. What a fantastic event. Bringing the whole town together, to witness a very unique spectical.

Although day TWO of the Birdman event was cancelled due to servere high winds and the highest tide of the year, Day ONE was perfect. An awesome success, seeing between 6,000 to 7,000 people watching from the shoreline (estimated figures from Sussex Police).

A 'Worthing Town Centre Initiative' event, Worthing First played an integral part in the planning and running of the weekends Birdman, including prime placement sponsorships from Worthing First members.

We would particularly like to thank members: Northbrook College, Carpenter Box, The Proto Restaurant Group - Food and The Fish Factory. Hot Dog Media, TakeawayMenu.com, Indigo Restaurant, The Brand Surgery, MiStore, Face Media Group and 24X for their sponsorship and contribution. Also thank you to Worthing Borough Council and West Sussex County Council, who both contributed substancial funding to ensure this event took place.

The Birdman stays in Worthing, for at least the next five years. Therefore this first event was so important, it's been a massive learning curve for all involved and we know we can't fail to make it even more of a success next year.

We welcome any comments you might have, so we can feed back to the Birdman Event Committee - and put your views into practice. email birdman@worthingfirst.org.uk

Congratulations to Sharon Clarke, of TCI, for co-ordinating a very professional outcome. Here's some photo's courtesy of The Telegraph

Brief History

Originating in Selsey, West Sussex, in 1971, Birdman moved to Bognor Regis in 1978. In '69 the end of Bognor pier was damaged by storms, and in 1999 a 90ft section washed into the sea. A further 60ft section was recently demonlished for safety reasons, rendering the pier too short to use safely for the Birdman event (high tide water levels - too shallow).
