Worthing First NewsThe latest news from Worthing First.... What a Result - Connect2 Wins! 13/12/2007Sustrans’ Connect2 bid to win £50million for community projects up and down the country has been voted the winner by the public. This is great news for Shoreham who stand to get £750,000 towards a much needed new footbridge. Sustrans’ Connect2 took 42 per cent of the whole vote and was announced the winner of The People's £50million Lottery (www.thepeoples50million.org.uk). With tough competition; the Eden Project, Sherwood Forest and the Black Country Urban Park, the communities behind all 79 projects pulled out all the stops to get people voting. Bridges, foot and cycle paths and even a ferry will make life easier and healthier for people. Adur Council Leader, Neil Parkin said: "This is absolutely fantastic news and an amazing achievement for everyone involved. Now this will mean a new footbridge, which with extra funding will become a reality for the people of Adur. I’m thrilled to bits and a happy Christmas Shoreham." John Grimshaw, Sustrans CEO said: "This is a fantastic Christmas present! We are delighted that Sustrans’ Connect2 has proved itself the peoples’ favourite in the public vote and won the £50million from the Big Lottery Fund." "We are immensely grateful to Adur District Council and everyone who got behind a new footbridge for Shoreham to make their votes count." "As a massive public consultation exercise Connect2 has engendered a huge amount of goodwill from all sectors. It has confirmed our belief that people want to walk and cycle more when given the right surroundings. But the hard work starts now and there will be a huge amount to be done to make sure we fulfil all our obligations to the Big Lottery Fund. Ultimately the real winners will be those thousands of people who will now be able to Connect2 their shops, schools, workplaces and each other every day! [back to news] |
