Worthing Seafront Roadworks - THE LATEST 10/11/2008

THE road improvement scheme on the seafront is "progressing well" and two-way traffic is set to be restored this week. Delays expected til just before Christmas.

Take a look at the proposed finished designs - first reported by Worthing First back in December 2007. Launch PDF HERE

This is according to Simon Elliott, the project manager for the £850,000 town centre enhancement scheme which aims to improve the Marine Parade and Chapel Road area.

Work is being carried out by West Sussex County Council's highways department which will see wider pavements created and a 20mph speed limit implemented.

Mr Elliott acknowledged the work in Marine Parade had been causing delays because the three-way lights in place meant only one lane of traffic could proceed at once.

But he said two lanes would be created on the south side of the road this week, which would allow "free-flowing" two-way traffic.

"This will hopefully reduce the delays currently being experienced by the temporary traffic signals," said Mr Elliott.

Mr Elliott added that during December only "minimal disruption works" would be carried out so the Worthing Christmas trade was not impacted.

The Marine Parade work is due to be completed on December 19 and is "progressing well".

The Chapel Road improvements are set to start on January 5 and should be completed by the end of March.

Some sections of Chapel Road will be closed for short periods and diversion will be put in place.

Story from Worthing Herald 10th November 2008

You'll find a fantastic 44 page downloadable document on these pages - the Seafront Strategy Final - but be warned... It's a 75meg download (I wish someone would show council staff how and what is a reasonable file size for surfing).

What's your views on all that...?

The locals are very aware of these works. I was in the Ardington Hotel on Thursday, an the traffic around The Steyne was incredibly quite. These works must have quite an effect on trade coming into the town. Hurry Up. JC

The 75meg document is worth a look - I'd recommend 'right click, save as' - to your desktop, rather than trying to open it on the fly. JC
